I have finished my 2nd week at the internship, and I now have 2 more weeks to go.
Halfway there!
In the past 2 weeks, I feel like I’ve learnt both about work, and about working in a Singapore-dominant community.
For work, I’ve managed to stick to a routine I’ve made for myself that works best for my schedule and my workload.
Every day as soon as I get to my desk I check my internal contacts and calendar, then go make myself a cup of tea, get back to my desk, and then look through my external contacts.
It’s nice to have a routine and it really feels like I’m “working”, if you get what I mean.
For being a part of the community, I’ve been working to blend in with the people more.
The first day I went in with a white collared shirt and black pumps and everything, but now I just wear a random shirt and jeans with sneakers.
Personally, I still find it funny that you can blend in better to an office environment in a tank top than a collared shirt.
Something else I found interesting, is how everyone goes out to get lunch together.
We all go out of the office together, buy whatever we want, and get together at the pantry to eat and talk together.
It’s only a 1-hour break for lunch but we all wait for each other.
It’s very different to what I would normally do for a 1-hour break, because I’d usually eat whatever is affordable and closest to me and take a nap for the next 45 minutes, but that doesn’t happen here.
Not sure if this is a collectivist-individualistic thing, but it’s quite interesting how this happens.
