I’ve been wandering around the streets of Tokyo and eating all the good food, so allow me to share it with you!
This here is called “abura-soba”.
Looks familiar?
Yeah, it looks like a cousin of ramen, don’t you think?
Actually, it’s like soupless ramen, but with very concentrated sauces that you mix the noodles with, so we aren’t too far away with our guess here.
The sauces are soy sauce flavoured, and before you mix everything together, you can put as much chilli oil, vinegar and onions into this bowl. It’s quite customisable.
My friend whom I met in university really urged me to try it when I went back to Japan, as they are a big fan of this dish, and so here I went.
“Abura” can be translated into oil, but it was not as oily as I was worried about, so the name is a little deceiving.
Sure enough, now I understand why they wanted me to try this out so badly.
It also feels more fitting to eat this during the summer than ramen, because there is no hot soup, making it a great alternative if you’re craving ramen but don’t like eating hot foods in the hot Japanese summers.
Highly recommend!
After eating this, I tried lemonade at a cute lemonade stand nearby.
The store was so cute and had little swings we could sit down in.
Definitely build for Instagram.
I don’t think lemonade is very popular in Japan, because I haven’t seen much being sold here, but it’s definitely a great match with the weather here!
The sweet and sour, cold citrus drink is so relieving in the humidity.
