It still surprises me how drastically differently Christmas is celebrated here.
Everyone goes home to get together with family; thus, all the shops are closed from the 24th to the 26th for the holiday break!
I’m assuming it’s because Canada is a Christian-majority country?
But usually, stores were open as usual in Japan and Singapore, and especially bakeries in Japan, because Christmas cakes are such a big thing there.
I figured last year that some shops were closed, but I thought those were smaller businesses only.
Only found out this week that almost all stores go on holiday!
I was trying to make plans with my other Japanese friend to grab dinner, but then we found out the restaurant owners here must take this very holiday seriously, so we had to reschedule it.
Even the nearby big chain drugstores are open for shorter hours these few days!
Oh yeah, it’s true that in Japan, we eat KFC for Christmas.
It’s not a turkey, it’s fried chicken.
Many people have asked me this question over the years and I must say it is true!
I myself wanted to get some cheeky fried chicken for Christmas, that is until I found out that even fried chicken restaurants were closed for Christmas. Whoops.
