トロント大のお話
おはようございます！どうも、ケイトです。
今日はトロント大の「カレッジシステム」が面白い話でも。

そもそも大学出願の話からすると、トロント大はオンタリオ州にあるので、OUACというカナダオンタリオ州専門の同時大学出願システムを使って出願します。
アメリカのCommon App、イギリスのUCASみたいなやつですね。
一校一校にエッセーが必須なアメリカに比べると、オンタリオ州は大学名を選択して成績出すだけなんで、一番シンプルなんですよ。
出願時、OUACのウェブサイトでトロント大を選択すると同時に、希望する所属カレッジを選択するんです。
トロント大は、わかりやすく言うと７つのカレッジ（学校）に分かれています。
カレッジによって受け取れる奨学金が違ったり、そのカレッジに所属しないと受けられない、カレッジと連携した授業もあるらしいです。私はまだ履修とかに辿り着いていないので、未確認ですが。
カレッジは第一から第三希望まで出願と同時に選択します。
それぞれのカレッジには提携レジデンスがあり、キャンパスに住みたい場合はカレッジのレジデンス（英語で「住むところ」）に住みます。
レジデンスの中には「いわゆる寮スタイル」（私室の外に共用トイレ・シャワー、食堂）から「アパートスタイル」（トイレ・シャワーが私室内、キッチン）と、場所によってシステム自体も全然違うんです。全部大学運営のレジデンスですが、全く違います。システム以外にもレジデンスは全て少しずつカラーが違い、私も色々悩んで選びました。
例えば、古い歴史伝統のあるレジデンスは内装がオシャレだったりなんだりでめちゃめちゃ人気で、競争率が高く、少なくとも第一希望じゃないと絶対入れないという噂があります。その中でも成績優秀者から優先されるので、結果としてレジデンスに住む生徒たちの毛色が「優秀」「やる気抜群」みたいな感じで偏ります。
他にも、私が第一希望にしたレジデンスである寮は「国際色が強い」と評判、インターナショナル生が多めのレジデンスです。多分噂が噂を呼んでどんどんインター生が集まっていってるんでしょうね。
まぁある程度自分の好みが通るタイプのハリポタの組み分けみたいなもんやと思ってもらって！！！
レジデンス内で新たに人に会う機会も増えますし、授業以外のタイミングで全然選択科目やバックグラウンドの違う人と仲良くなれるのがこのシステムの強みだと思っています。
あとこれは多分海外の学校あるあるだと思うのですが、レジデンスに所属することで仲間意識なんてものが生まれ、大学内でコミュニティが作られるんですよね。マルボロカレッジの頃も、寮対抗みたいな感じでよくイベントありましたし。
まぁそんなこんな言いましたけど今の世界情勢でビザも出願出来てない状態の私が９月から寮に入れる訳ないんですけどね！！！！！！！！！ハッ！！！！！！！！！！！！！

I thought I’ll write about the college system of UofT, but it was a heck a lot more complicated to explain than I thought, so please take in account that this blog is mainly just a journal. I might be wrong.🤷♀️
So UofT has a college system, which divides the campus population in about 7 different “college”s.
When applying to UofT through the Ontario universities’ application centre (OUAC), it requires your school transcript and grades, plus a top 3 choice of prefered colleges.
The college does not divide you into campuses or anything, but depending on the college, there is variation in which college-linked classes you can take, and how much scholarship funding you can receive, etc.
Apparently.
I actually haven’t gotten to the course enrolment stages yet, so I don’t really know how that goes.
And with the college system is the linked residences.
The colleges of UofT have residences, for students that want to live on campus.
All the residences are quite different from each other. Some residences have a dormitory-style, eg food hall&common use bathroom system, but some residences have apartment-style, eg built-in kitchen.
The residences also have student population traits.
Such as, one of the older residences is popular for the unique aesthetics of the building, and because of its popularity and UofT’s system of selecting students with better grades first, the residence has a lot of super-enthusiastic and extremely clever people.
Another residence is famous for having the highest international student rates and diversity, presumably caused by the fact that it has a college-linked class based on international societies, and students were attracted to that.
There was something similar to that back in Marlborough College (that was called “houses” instead of “colleges”), and that was fun too.
I personally enjoy residence systems, because it creates the rare opportunities to meet new people that have less to do in common with you- do not take the same classes, activities, different backgrounds, and more.
It also makes a sense of smaller communities, which I think would help in a huge student population university like UofT.
