四季を感じると嬉しくなる南国育ち

どうもケイトです。
大学の仲間とは卒業後すぐ散り散りになってしまうので、最近は隙さえあれば友達とご飯に行っているのですが、話題はもっぱら「卒業後どうするの？」で、胃が痛いです。
さて、もうトロントもすっかり春です。
私の大学のキャンパス、St.Georgeには桜がある、とは前々から聞いていたのですが、なんと今年初めて自分で見ることが出来ました！！Robarts図書館の裏手側に、沢山咲いていました。（全然関係ない話ですが、発音はロバー→ツではなく、ロバー↑ツらしいです。最近知りました。）
例年は４月の最終週〜５月上旬くらいに咲いていて、早くても日本への一時帰国ギリギリでして、なかなか時間を作って見に行くことが難しかったんですよね。
ですが今年は４月中旬の今すでに満開でした！
…うーん、気候としては多分異常気象寄りなので喜ばしいのかどうかは分かりません。
でも凄く綺麗で沢山写真を撮ったので、ここに残しておきます。
運良く本当に天気がいい日に行けたので、久しぶりの晴天と美しい桜に、とてもいい気分になりました。
カナダは意外と桜が多いこと、ご存知でしたか？
トロントだけでも５箇所ほど、トリニティ・ベルウッズ公園、ヨーク大学、トロントアイランド、そしてトロント最大の公園ハイパーク公園があります。
オンタリオ州全土ですと、60か所に合計3000本、と書かれていました。
開花状況に関してはトロント大学の桜は先週からですが、ここは他の箇所より早いらしく、ハイパークではソメイヨシノが今週に満開を迎えるそうです。そちらも是非見たいところですね。
ちなみにハイパークの桜の歴史は第二次世界大戦後、1959年に日系カナダ人がトロントに移住し、東京から友好の証として贈られたらしいです。約65年前ですって。在カナダ日本大使館のサイトに色々興味深い話があったので、是非。
そして話は変わりますが、今週の金曜日、２５日は私のトロント大学での最後（予定）の試験です。
緊張しますね。なんだか今からソワソワしています。
あ、そうです、なんと４年生も誕生日当日は試験です。終わってからしんみり誕生日を感じたいと思います。

It is beautifully spring in Toronto!
I knew that there were cherry blossoms on my university campus (St. George) for a long time, but this year I was finally! able to see them by myself for the first time.
There were a lot of them blooming on the back side of Robarts library.
(Off topic but apparently, it’s pronounced ro-barts, not robarts. )
Usually, the cherry blossoms in Toronto bloom from the last week of April to the beginning of May, just before my flight to Japan, so it was a busy period and difficult for me to make time to go see them.
This year, however, they were already in full bloom in mid-April!
…Well, I don’t know if it is a good thing or not, since it does sound a little like climate change.
But it was so beautiful that I took a lot of pictures, so I’ll leave them here.
I was lucky enough to go on a really nice bright sunny day, so it was a very beautiful time.
Did you know that there are surprisingly many cherry blossoms in Canada?
In Toronto alone, there are about five locations: Trinity Bellwoods Park, York University, Toronto Island, and Toronto’s largest park, High Park.
In all of Ontario, there are a total of 3,000 cherry trees in 60 locations.
As for the blooming situation, the cherry blossoms at the University of Toronto started blooming last week, but it seems to be earlier here than in other places.
The cherry blossoms in High Park are said to bloom this week. This one dates back to 1959, after World War II, when Tokyo gave them to Canada as a token of friendship. That was about 65 years ago. The website of the Embassy of Japan in Canada has a lot of interesting stories so check that out if you’re interested!
