カナダアメリカ間、２回目？

先週はニューヨークに遊びに行ってきました！
友達と現地集合での旅行だったのですが、私にとっては卒業旅行みたいなものです。ちょっと気が早いけどね。
カナダからアメリカに遊びにいく利点は勿論、圧倒的な近さもあります。
だってトロントからニューヨークまで飛行機で２時間かかりません。ボストンも１時間半とかです。
でもそれと同様くらいに輝くのが、「入国審査が楽すぎる」という点です。
カナダアメリカ間での移動は特別扱いになっていまして、カナダへの入国審査の質問でも「US ONLY」「乗り継ぎ」「他の国から」の３つの選択肢を与えられまして、アメリカから入るとこのUS ONLYを選択します。それくらい別物扱いです。
しかも大変で有名なアメリカの入国審査に関しては、もはや無いです。
カナダ側で飛行機に乗る前に、アメリカの入国審査も済ましちゃいます。
そしてそれも簡単で、宿泊先の情報とかもちゃんと印刷して持っていきましたが、ESTAビザの印刷どころか、パスポートだけ見せて終わりました。
システム上に保存されているとはいえ結構細かく聞かれるのが「あるある」ですが、カナダからの移動だけは別です。
ありがたいね。
とはいえ入国審査が楽なだけで、手荷物チェックが細かすぎて靴も脱がされて３Dスキャン的なこともして…をするから時間がかかるし全然列が進まないのは変わらずです。アメリカ行きの手荷物検査は本当に時間がかかるので、もし皆さんがアメリカに行く予定があるなら、十分に時間に余裕を持って行ってくださいね。
勿論違う国から飛んできて合流した友達は、ちゃんと宿泊先も滞在期間も聞かれたそうです。ザ・アメリカの入国審査。
個人的に面白かったのが、今回使用した搭乗口のゲートが、２０２２年の１１月、3年生の頃にボスキャリに挑んだ時に使用したゲートの真隣だった事です。
ゲートに向かいながら、あれ？ここ凄く見覚えがあるな？と思ったら、2年前にソファに座って１時間ほど寝ていたあの搭乗口のすぐ目の前に着きました。
まさかまた帰ってくるとはね。

Last week I went to New York with a friend, like a small graduation trip for me. It’s a bit early, but hey.
One advantage of going from Canada to the US is, of course, the extreme proximity.
It takes less than two hours to fly from Toronto to New York. Boston is also only an hour and a half away.
But what shines just as bright is the fact that immigration is super easy.
When you enter Canada from the United States, you are given three options: ‘US ONLY’, ‘connecting flight’ or ‘from another country’, and if you enter from the US, you select ‘US ONLY’. That is how differently they are treated.
If you enter from Canada, there isn’t even any immigration clearance in the US, which is famous for being very difficult.
You also go through US immigration on the Canadian side of the border, before you board the plane, or get to the terminal or anything.
And it’s easy there too. I printed out the information about my accommodation and ESTA application and everything, but they only looked through my passport and that was it.
I know the details are stored in the system, so it’s not like they don’t have that information, but it’s ‘a thing’ to be asked quite a ton of questions. So it’s nice to be able to skip that bit.
I’ve flown into the US from Japan before but that was a lot of waiting, queuing, talking, explaining and all that.
Of course, my friend who flew in from a different country was asked a ton of questions like where they were staying and how long. The classic American immigration clearance experience package.
However, it’s no different that the hand luggage check is super detailed where you take off your shoes and do a 3D scan and all, so it still takes quite a long time. Baggage checks to the US take a really long time, so if you are planning to go to the US, make sure you have plenty of time to spare.

今回一緒に旅した友達と最後に会ったのはマレーシアで、いつか日本で会おうね！なんて言って別れたのに、まさか再会がニューヨークになるのは想定外すぎて面白かったですね。
世界って思うより狭いし、私たちは結構自由に歩いてるなとか思ったりしました。
どこにいてもまた会えそう、って信じさせてくれる友達に感謝。
