ホットドッグ
おはようございます。
どうもケイトです。
そういえばちょっと前にホットドッグスタンドの話をしましたが、これ、日本に無いですよね。
いわゆる屋台とキッチンカーの中間みたいなものだと思います。
キッチンカーも大学の道路に大量に止まってるけれど、それとはちょっと違うんでね。
こんな感じです。
ポスターが見えますが、こんなにこじんまりとしたホットドッグスタンドでも、カード決済もオンラインバンキング振込みも出来ます。
トロント凄い。
スタンドはどこも大体常時同じ場所に出店していますが、天候が荒れて大雪や強風の時はいなかったり、夜遅くには帰ったりします。移動途中のところを見かけた事はないんですけども…。車で引っ張っていくのかな。
写真に載せた私がよく行く場所は、大学のど真ん中にほぼ毎日立っているので、ありがたいですね。
よく見ると後ろに大学の建物の一つが写り込んでいます。
これ、この大学のど真ん中のスタンドは常に同じおじさんがいるので、勝手に私は「ホットドッグスタンドは完全に個人経営なんだ」と思い込んでいたんですよね。
でもいろんなスタンドを見てみて気づいたのですが、個人経営とは言っても複数人従業員さんがいる場合もあり、その複数人で数時間おきに回しているので、なんと２４時間営業のホットドッグスタンドもあるんです。
この国コンビニですら２４時間営業じゃないのに！！！！！
多分ホットドッグスタンドと一部マクドナルドだけだよ！！！
いや、むしろ、個人経営でチェーン店じゃないから２４時間営業が出来るのかも？
ちなみに教室から近く、注文と同時に焼き始めてくれて、出来立て熱々のホットドッグが数分で提供されるので、とても便利。
講義と講義の間の１時間ほどの休憩にピッタリ。寒空の下で食べる熱々ホットドッグはなんだか心にまで栄養が沁み渡る気がします。
一日中大学にいると流石にお腹が空きますが、キッチンカーで注文しちゃうと作っている間の待ち時間が10分程度かかり、教室間の移動に割く時間を考えると、食べる時間がとても短くなってしまうんですよね。
キッチンカーは値段もちゃんとしたお食事の値段がしますし、良いことですが量が多く、１時間しか休みがない中だと逆に私の胃には持て余して困っちゃうことが多いです。正直自分的には２食分くらいのサイズのものが多く、大体半分食べたら持ち帰って数時間後に夕飯へと変化します。少し勿体無いし不便です。
なので手軽に食べれるホットドッグが重宝するんですよね。
多分トロント大学現地に来てから３年間、ずっと定期的に食べ続けています。
きっと大学を卒業して北米を離れたら、このホットドッグが恋しくなるんだろうなぁ。
みんなはいつも食べてるご飯、いつも寄っちゃうお店はありますか？

A while ago I talked about hot dog stands, but I completely forgot this was a really Western (North American, probably) thing.
It looks like something between a food stall and a kitchen car.
All the stands are usually in the same place at all times, but if the weather is rough, like heavy snow or strong winds, they may not be there, or they may leave late at night.
There is this specific hotdog stand that I go to all the time, because it’s in the middle of the university.
And it always has the same uncle, so I had assumed that all hotdog stands were completely privately owned and run.
But quite recently, I realised that even though they are privately run, some hotdog stands may have several employees, who work on a schedule, so there are some hotdog stands that are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Even convenience stores in this country are not open 24 hours a day!!!!!!
Personally, I find that quite funny.
Come to think of it, I don’t think there are random “food stands” in Singapore at all.
Only ice cream sandwich carts. There are tons of ice cream sandwich carts.
All of the food-related places are either inside a building, within a specific food court, or that sort.
Probably legal differences, but things are vastly different.
Actually, it may be the different weather?
Running a food stand using flames and everything without properly air-conditioned surroundings in Singapore sounds like a heat stroke waiting to happen.
I assume keeping the ingredients fresh in the Singaporean outdoors might be a struggle too.
Also, I probably wouldn’t drift towards a piping hot hotdog if I was walking under the scorching Singaporean sun either.
But I’ll probably miss the hotdogs when I leave Toronto. It’s been my staple for nearly 3 years.

夏休み中にトロントに来た父親にもホットドッグスタンドを見せたかったけど、長期休み中は学生が大学内にほとんどいないからか、お店がなかったです。
その間は他の場所に立ってたりするのかな…
