World Scholars

はい!World Scholars Cup!

Hello everyone!

Kate here.

I can't believe it's already been a week since World Scholars Cup.

In 2 weeks I'd be in secondary 2.

A month's time and I'd be 15 years old.

Less than 3 months until Year 11.

The world's spinning too quickly, I cant keep track XP

Okay!

World Scholars!

It took about 5 hours to get to KL on car, both on the way and back.
There were 399 people, everyone in teams of 3. Age group, from 14 to 18..? I think.
The whole competition was divided into 4 areas- Collaborative writing, Scholar's Challenge (Test), Scholar's Bowl (Quiz), and the Team Debate.
For the writing, it was an essay arguing about some statement.
We had 6 options in between our groups;
Literature, Science&Technology, History, Modern Mysteries, Arts&Music, and Social studies.
We were told about the topics beforehand to study about.
I remember the statement for.. social studies, I think? It was something along the lines of 'Should children be born with the memories of their parents?'.
Just to brag, I got a silver medal for this so I'm proud. Even though I don't remember what I wrote about.
The Scholar's Challenge is basically just a test.
We had about.. 2 hours? to complete a 120 question test.
There were the 6 topics again, each 20 questions.
The interesting point about it is, it was in mark sheet form, and we could colour in as many options as we wanted.
All of them were multiple choice with 5 options, so practically you could colour in 5 options for everything if you weren't sure- just that the points would be separated into fractions by the amout of answers you coloured in.
For example, if I thought option A and C seemed ''true'', I would colour in both and get 0.5 points if one of them were right.
In the Scholar's Bowl, all teams had one clicker each in the huge auditorium.
Questions would come up on the presentation, so we talked within groups to select one option.
There were multiple ways of scoring- like, [1000 points – percentage of correct answers] would be what we scored in a particular area.
We had 3 rounds of team debating. It was in a tournament form, so if you won one, you would go against another winning group.
The three statements that we argued were:
'Should the government inform citizens if the world was going to end?'
'Should Malaysia aim for the first man on Mars?'
'Should it be legal to bring the dead back to life?'
I think all of them are VERY interesting topics to argue about. For example, the last statement got very.. um..
Science VS Religious Beliefs. How hard is that to comment about without offending each other.
Overall I REALLY enjoyed everything, and brought back 6 medals with me- 4 Silver 2 Gold.
Though 5 of them are group medals, we got 15th overall in the competition and top score in the school, so I say it was good!
