Last week I got onto the 6 pm train at Shibuya station last week and immediately regretted that decision.
\nI\u00a0had forgotten how busy the rush hour trains were, and I thought I could make it!
\nRookie mistake. Definitely had too much faith in myself.
\nEspecially after using the Toronto trains for the past 8 months (which are practically always empty), it felt like I was drowning in people.<\/p>\n
I know a lot of people focus on the busy trains when talking about the Japanese train rush hours, but I think the real boss is navigating through the train station.
\nIt’s so physically and emotionally draining trying to walk to your destination when everyone around you is also trying to go in different directions.
\nYou can’t exactly\u00a0move around at your will, and my least favourite part, you can’t walk at your desired pace of walking.
\nEither it’s too fast or too slow, but walking at a different person’s pace is one of the most tiring things you can possibly do.<\/p>\n
In addition to that, because I’m not used to the train stations in Tokyo, I have no clue where things are.
\nWhich gate is where, which exit is where, and where to get onto another train… all of that information, I have to look for signs inside the station.
\nAnd it’s stressful when you can’t just stand on the side and stare at the signs for a while!<\/p>\n
I know Japanese supermarkets and stores like Donki are famous for being a sensory overload, but nothing gets me more overloaded than a storm of people all talking and walking at different paces.<\/p>\n
