\nSo last week, I went for a blood donation.<\/p>\n
Blood donations are quite easy to access and common practice in Japan, and it quite literally helps people’s lives.
\nThere are donating “rooms” or “busses” that you could either just walk in, or call for an appointment and get your blood taken for donation.<\/p>\n
The one I went to was in the MIDDLE of Tokyo, about a minute walk from Shibuya station, and the view from the waiting room was THE Scramble Square- the worlds’ busiest pedestrian crossing. It was on the 6th floor, so you could even see the thousands of people walking across that place.
\nWhat a convenient place to have a blood donation room.<\/span><\/p>\nDepending on the type of donation, but it doesn’t take that long either.
\nMine was a 400ml full blood donation, which simply means 400mls of my blood was drawn.
\nThe whole process of prepping and testing included takes about 1 hour, but the main process of taking out the blood was only about 15 minutes, where you simply lay in a reclined chair and stare into midair whilst the nurse sticks a needle in you. Simple as that.<\/p>\n
You could also do a plasma\/platelet donation, in which they take out blood, spin it around like a centrifuge, and give you back the rest of the blood. This is apparently less “damage” to the donor, and your body recovers much faster than simply losing all 400mls of blood, so you are allowed to do this much more frequently. How interesting is that?
\nFrom what I heard from the staff there, the “experienced” donors will come in for a plasma donation, and before they leave, already book an appointment for 2 weeks ahead; so if I wanted to do a plasma donation, I would have to book 2 weeks in advance\u00a0or wait for a cancellation, because there were no free slots available.
\nI never thought blood donation was that popular, so that was a surprise.<\/p>\n
And also, you get a ton of free snacks and drinks afterwards to raise your blood sugar levels.
\n… Which,\u00a0is why I assume there were friend groups\u00a0in school uniforms that looked like they just walked out of school sitting there to get their blood donated… to get together and eat snacks and drinks for free… lol cute, still helping lives!<\/p>\n
