Kinda continued from last week, but stuff about my PSE lessons. <\/p>\n
This Thursday was about "third culture kids".<\/p>\n
The term appoints to kids that were born and raised in different countries.<\/p>\n
I fit in that category as a Japanese raised in Japan, and so does MOST of the people in an international school.<\/p>\n
The lecture was about how to live as a third culture kid in university.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
You think it's a weird thing to talk about, right?<\/p>\n
But it is a super common topic between international school kids, trust me on this.<\/p>\n
"Where are you from?" is just such a common phrase, yet so hard to answer!<\/p>\n
Like, physically I came from Singapore, also my upbringing is super Singapore, but my roots are completely Japan.<\/p>\n
I can't really reduce it down to one country that I am from!<\/p>\n

My friends, who some of them have far more complex backgrounds than me, have more struggles on trying to give a short answer to this question.<\/p>\n
Especially because usually, when this is asked, it's just trying to keep up a conversation and they aren't really interested in your backgrounds anyways. 😂<\/p>\n

I think this concept relates to how some universities measure "diversity".<\/p>\n
As I was looking for information for my application, I really felt like there were a lot of universities who claimed they were diverse because of how many nationalities their students were. <\/p>\n
But see, I don't think diversity can be directed to one's roots. <\/p>\n
Like, if you just look at my roots, I will be considered the same as someone who had been born and brought up in Japan with all Japanese influences, when I have never really lived in Japan.<\/p>\n
We clearly wouldn't have the same culture, thoughts, and values. <\/p>\n
Also, some people who are "foreign" by background, can be entirely born and raised in Japan like any other Japan rooted people.<\/p>\n
Don't you think it's a little too reductionist to connect these dots?<\/p>\n
